Does your car need the Engine Timing belt replaced?

Do you know if your timing belt has ever been replaced?

Timing belt replacement is essential preventative maintenance for your vehicles engine.

If your vehicles timing belt breaks your engine valves and pistons will come in contact causing at the minimum some valves to bend.

When this happens the engine must be disassembled in order to carry out repairs. Sometimes the repair costs on older vehicles can exceed the value of the car.

It is impossible to tell when your timing belt needs to be changed; you can only go by the manufacturers recommendations.These recommendations will be either a specific mileage of a specific time, recommendations vary from engine to engine. The average replacement interval is 60,000 to 100,000 kilometres or 4 to 5 years.

Replacement of the timing belt can be labour intensive. We at IVD will only replace the complete timing belt kit, this is the timing belt along with any tensioner or idle pulleys that are driven by the timing belt. Since many engines run the water pump from the timing belt we would also always recommend to our customers that they should consider replacing the pump at the same time even if it doesn’t leak. This will prevent a water pump replacement later on that will also necessitate the belt to be replaced yet again, by doing this the customer will save on labour and another visit of their vehicle to the workshop.

Other points to take note of are:

• Do you know the repair history of the vehicle? if you do not or are unsure on the side of safety we would recommend that you have the timing belt replaced.
• Is the vehicle leaking any type of fluid or oils that might degrade the belt, we would recommend replacement ASAP as well as repairing the leak.

Why it is important to have regular Oil Changes:

Many people now days are very likely to leave it longer to replace their engine Oil and Filter.

These images are from two vehicles we serviced recently, please be aware that engine oil must be changed over a time period as well as a mileage period. Just because you do not dive the car very far does not mean you will get away with not changing the oil more often.

The Engine, this is the most important serviceable component within your vehicle, consider it as the Heart of your Car.

Driving around with dirty oil or not enough oil will shorten the life of your engine and associated components that need regular lubrication.

Over time, the repeated heating and cooling of the oil as well as the accumulation of particles will make your engine oil heavier / thicker.

With the engine oil thickness increasing will decrease the oils ability to flow (also known as change in viscosity), this will leave harmful deposits in your engine and cause extensive damage.

Two of the main components affected by the lack of oil changes are the turbo and camshafts, but make no bones about it the entire engine will suffer in some shape or form and premature wear is inevitable.

The quality of oil you put into your engine is extremely important, now days you must use the manufacturer recommended oils for your engine.

IVD would recommend to all our customers that they carry out preventive engine maintenance by having a lubrication and vehicle check over at least once every year regardless of the vehicle mileage covered within that year.

This will reduce the need for any engine repairs and should always be part of your own personal preventative engine maintenance program
